From the website http://www.ncncree.com/ncn/
As nomadic people, NCN's ancestors developed a spiritual
connection and respect for the lands and waters for their life-giving bounty
from fishing, hunting, trapping, and the fruits and medicinal plants from the
forests.
The surrounding lands of NCN encompass tracts of black and white spruce in the northern boreal forest that are interspersed with rivers and lakes within wilderness that has been home to the Cree people long before the arrival of the first Europeans.
Wuskwatim is being built on
the Burntwood River at Taskinigahp Falls, approximately 45 kilometres southwest
of Thompson and about 40 kilometres southeast of Nelson House.
While the partnership with Manitoba Hydro doesn’t include the transmission lines, we have consulted with Hydro regarding the best route through our territory and compensation for any impact on affected communities.
Our recent history has influenced how we have approached this project. Since the 1960s our people have, in one way or another, been involved with Manitoba Hydro regarding hydroelectric development in our traditional territory.
